2015 Consumer Survey infographicThe 2015 ASDS Consumer Survey on Cosmetic Dermatologic Procedures provides a treasure trove of data that help explain why half of consumers are considering a cosmetic procedure and to whom they are turning to achieve their desired results.

Among the notable revelations:

  • The top three reasons consumers choose cosmetic procedures are to look as young as they feel or better, to appear more attractive and to feel more confident.
  • The top cosmetic concerns for consumers are excess weight, skin texture and/or discoloration, lines and wrinkles around and under the eyes, excess fat under the chin/neck and sagging facial skin.
  • The specialty in which a physician is board-certified is the single most important factor when selecting a practitioner for a cosmetic procedure – outweighing cost, physician referral and eight other choices.
  • Dermatologists carry more influence regarding decisions to have cosmetic procedures than friends, physician referral or 11 other factors.
  • The majority of respondents in eight of 10 procedure categories who had visited a dermatologist chose an ASDS member.

ASDS members performed more than 6 million cosmetic procedures last year, according to the Society’s procedures survey, with laser, light and energy-based treatments, wrinkle-relaxing injections and soft-tissue fillers the most frequently performed. Those procedures match up with the cosmetic concerns respondents expressed in the consumer survey.

The reputation of Society members as leading pioneers and experts of skin procedures – and their ability to provide a full range of cosmetic medical treatments – explain why consumers trust ASDS members most.
