Laser, light and energy-based devices provide dermatologists with a seemingly endless array of options to treat their patients.

“Lasers and other energy sources have become effective for many procedures with minimal downtime and minimal pain,” said ASDS President George J. Hruza, MD, MBA. “Hair removal, tattoo removal, sun-damage repair, wrinkle and scar improvement, brown spot and broken blood vessel fading, fat reductions and skin tightening can all be effectively treated with laser and energy sources.”

That versatility has made laser, light and energy-based procedures the top category for the fourth year in a row for ASDS members. Together, they performed about 2.7 million procedures using lasers, lights and energy-based devices in 2014, according to the ASDS Survey on Dermatologic Procedures.

Utilizing the devices for hair removal, to treat facial redness, photo rejuvenation, photodynamic therapy and age spots were most common among more than a dozen cosmetic uses.

Hruza said patients consider the procedures to be effective and convenient, typically resulting in minimal or no down time.

However, he said exercising caution in choosing a practitioner is critically important. Many of the devices are capable of damaging living tissue, which makes it essential that consumers choose well-trained physicians for the procedures.

“Dermatologic surgeons are board certified in dermatology and are the skin experts,” Hruza said. “ASDS members have been at the lead of laser and other energy source development for the treatment of various skin conditions. We are the experts, and patients realize that.”
